LSKC Kayak Storage Rules

Policy

The primary purpose of making kayak storage available is to facilitate sea kayaking by club members who would otherwise not have access to suitable storage. LSKC makes storage available for club members to store sea kayaks in a safe manner that supports members’ activities within the club. Revenue from the rental of spaces is secondary to the members’ benefit. Boat storage will not be subsidised by other club members. Spaces are to be used for storage of the hirer’s own boats and are not for storage for non-members craft or boats used on a commercial basis.

Terms & Conditions

Allocated space and boat dimensions

The containers are divided into 4 rows, with 4 boats to each row. A minimum length of boat is dictated by the spacing between support trusses.

The layout of the container defines the limits on boat dimensions.

Boat dimensions

Maximum boat length

5.90m
Minimum boat length3.90m (13 feet)
Maximum boat width610mm (slot width 590mm)
Minimum boat width

NA

The actual width of a space is 590mm. Slightly larger boats may fit if stored at an angle, and it is possible to offset the storage of adjacent boats to give some overlap

If a hirer hires multiple storage slots, and it is possible to allocate adjacent slots a single boat may exceed the maximum width as long as the total width of the adjacent slots is not exceeded, i.e. the total width of the 2 boats must not exceed 1180mm

Care and handling of boats

When accessing boats in the container, users shall:

  • Ensure the container is left secure after use
  • Make their own arrangements to secure kayaks within the container, the club is not responsible for any craft or equipment stored in the containers
  • Not keep anything in the container that is perishable or hazardous
  • Avoid handling of other kayaks should without good reason- e.g. safety or prevention of damage
  • Avoid storing their kayak in a way that interferes with access to other kayaks
  • Avoid storing their kayak in a manner that is likely to cause damage to other kayaks and stored equipment
  • Clean their kayak before storage for biosecurity and to remove any sand (with wet sponge or hose)
  • Empty any water that has entered the kayak

What can be stored

Storage is provided explicitly for sit-in sea kayaks to facilitate sea kayaking within the club. It is not general purpose storage and not intended for storing craft unrelated to sea kayaking. A sea kayak is considered to be one which fits within the dimension limits described, rather than anything else that might float on the sea.

Nothing is to be stored in the containers other than sea kayaking equipment.

It may be possible to store sea kayaks outside of the standard dimensions, however explicit permission is required, e.g. a modular double sea kayak

That permission will be based on whether the craft can be stored safely without damage to other equipment.

Number of kayaks stored per member

The club reserves the right to reduce the number of spaces per member to 2 boats to make space available for other users. (space is made available to facilitate access to sea kayaking within the club.)
Spaces must be rented in the name of the boat owner who must be a club member. The renting of spaces by club members on behalf of non-club members is not allowed.

No Commercial Use

Storage of kayaks intended for use on a commercial basis is prohibited.

Rental Period & Payment

Rental of kayak storage basis is for a 12 month period starting from the the beginning of the club membership year on 1st February. Storage starting later in the year will be charged pro-rata. In general payment is non-refundable, but the club may at its discretion provide a partial refund if the rental is terminated with a significant period remaining, based on 2 months notice and pro rata payment.

Termination of rental

LSKC will give renters 3 months notice of termination or major alteration to the rental terms.

The rental may be terminated without by LSKC if:

  • The storage is used for unsuitable craft
  • The renter causes damage to craft other than their own
  • Payment is overdue by more than 2 months

Renters are requested to give LSKC 2 months notice of termination.

Removal of craft following breaches of rental conditions

LSKC will remove any craft that have not been removed by the owner at the termination of the rental. In the first instance, LSKC will try to return the craft to the owner’s property. If, after reasonable effort, LSKC is unable to contact the kayak owner, LSKC may dispose of the craft.
