3 of us ( Tim Gibson, Chris Gordon-D’Rozario & myself) met saturday morning at Eyemouth. We were going to launch from up river by the dockyard but the jetty here is steep , slippy at low tide & with some steps – so we didn’t . Launching from the beach with the coastal rowers we narrowly avoided the Eyemouth Lifeboats ( both inshore & AWB) racing off to St Abbs to ‘rescue’ a broken down dive boat, the St Abbs independent rib having looked after the divers.
We had a great trip down exploring the caves we could get into as the tide started to flood. We had the usual stop at Marshall meadows and the trip up the shaft to the caravan site.
Then onto Berwick for lunch below the caravan park. We didn’t leave Berwick til 3pm and explored as many of the caves as we could coming back and the old Seine fishing site at Hilton Bay. Nice sea stack just south of Burnmouth too.
Wind had dropped off by late afternoon and with the sea barely ruffled we caught sight of a couple of fins ahead of us just off Burnmouth. 5 minutes later we were treated to a pod of 5 dolphins feeding and passing within 20 metres of us. (we had seen several shoals of spratts just at the surface). despite the proximity of the A1 and main East coast rail line we could hear the breath of the dolphins as they surfaced. By this time I was running a bit late for a play I was meant to be going to in Dunbar. So we cracked on for the last 5km and I headed up the Eye water and got out at the steep slipway by the ‘free’ car park.
Speedy loading ( a bit like Ryanair but with Tim helping) meant I was off the water and away in under 15 minutes. Made it to the play with minutes to spare ( did have to sit through in wet shorts though!).
Thanks to Tim & Chris for coming. It’s a lovely bit of coast and relatively close to Edinburgh.
Sorry no photos from me
