Easdale / Garvellachs and Corryvrecken 20th June 2026

Starting from Easdale on an ebbing tide which dispatched us off to the Garvellachs rather briskly.

Choosing not to leave Easdale via the old pier workings but to use the west side to catch the flow. There was a bit of chop to contend with then a reasonable paddle down to the Garvellachs.

We choose to use the west of the island then through the first gap.

The geology is interesting: tall cliffs varying in different types of rock. The next gap took us round to the back of the island round the bottom then onto the Monestry site where we respectively camped.

The  next day was to travel onto the Corryvreckan…

Setting up a transit for the bottom of Scarba which according to Dave’s Garmin was almost straight.

Passing through the Corryvreckan on  a 90% flow during the summer  solstice was fun , a few braces needed on route!  We were also escorted through with a pod of Porpoises.

We stopped for lunch at the bothy, also to wait for the tide to turn .
A rather expensive yacht was moored in the bay apparently waiting for a venison delivery from the Gillies .

Gerry was getting twitchy so suggested leaving early to catch a bit of flow at the Grey Dogs. We arrived in time to see the flow just starting.

Using Dave Grieve as our expert guide we used the correct lane to arrive at Belnahua.

The old workers cottages are still there ,also good views of the flooded quarries. A very atmospheric island with stunning views to the south.

Our last day was a trip back to Easdale and an appointment with the pub.

Thank you to Gerry for organising, Dave Grieve our guide and Clare and Morva for being great travel buddies.

David Towsey.
