A great alternative to the strong winds forecast for the west coast. Based at the campsite at Dunbeath (www.invercaravanpark.co.uk – highly recommended, small site with well drained pitches for tents, showers and a well equipped kitchen where we could shelter). We had 3 excellent paddles: N to Lybster and back (20k), from Helmsdale to Dunbeath (22k) and from Keiss Castle to Skirza (10k and timed to arrive just as the wind picked up). All paddles took us past sea stacks, into caves and through arches with fantastic rock formations providing high rise accommodation for several species of seabirds including a few puffins. Arguably more dramatic than the Small Isles. Karin, Jane and Phil, ably led by SKL Morva (who also took many beautiful photos) made the very best of a small window of better weather. (See Doug Coopers book for more details of the paddles).
