A group of seven of us copied the classic David Grieve route around Lismore the weekend after his trip as some of us could not join that trip.
We followed the traditional route but started from the big lay by on the A828 opposite Shuna Island as the parking in Port Appin was very full. We circumnavigated the island and made our way to the beach on Eilean na Caorach where we were able to cross and pick up to later arrivals from Port Appin at the end of the day.
The next day we went down the west coast of Lismore reasonably rapidly calling in at Castle Coeffin as the tide on the tip was to flow against us in the afternoon. Pushing on we got to the gap between Eilean Musdile and the main island just as a nice flow was building against us. However clear eddies and a bit of a sprint saw us push up the flow into the campsite at Rubhda da Usige
The following day we had a later start to catch the tide down the Lynn of Lorne and with a small swell behind us we made fast progress up to Port Appin, giving a nice element of challenge to some of the less experienced members on the trip. All made it back without incident despite the occasional wobble.
This is a very easy trip and is quite protected from the wind with options for most wind directions so is a good one for mixed ability groups as you can choose the sheltered side of the island if wind forecast changes, pay attention to the tide times at the bottom of this island when planning the trip, slack water when you plan to hit the bottom of the island in the afternoon is ideal
